The company has its history entwined into that of
the founder and sole investor-Kashim Bukar Shettima.
He started business as a student; when on holidays in London he
buys Electrical and Electronics Gadgets and Equipments which he
sells to fellow students on resumption from holiday. On
completion of his education he worked briefly in a cousins
company as a director. He was involved in sales and supply of
building materials, importation of Steel from Zurich and
supplies to Katsina Steel rolling mill, Katsina State, Nigeria.
He started used cars business in proper in 1989 which took him
to Belgium where he imported his first used car for sale. He
sold it and on his next trip he imported two cars. Within a
short time he started import new cars from Europe and the U.S.A.
The steady growth of the Automobile business did not stop him
from delving into other businesses. He pursued and secured Local
Purchase Order to supply equipments and parts to companies and
industries. In 1990, Kaduna Refineries and Petrochemical Company
awarded him a contract to supply refinery parts and spares; this
took him to the United States of America.
The magnitude of his various businesses prompted the
registration of Barbedos Ventures Limited with the Corporate
Affairs Commission on July 18 th, 1991.
The Oil and Gas sector in the Nigerian economy require investors
with experience and solid asset base as player in the industry;
Kashim Bukar Shettima, at this stage has gathered enough
experience in the Nigerian business scene to make an entry into
the sector, and this he did with the registration of Enigma
Limited on 17 th December, 1997.
Though he was very successful with automobiles and his other
businesses, he had a greater vision of entering into the Oil and
Gas sector. As he was new in this field he studied the market
and worked in many areas surrounding the oil industry, in the
process he acquired the core knowledge of the business; he
started his consultancy services company on 2nd February, 1998
called Skylimit International. With the company firmly rooted in
the oil industry there was a need to spread into other aspect of
the industry. To manage all the activities in the oil industry
he registered Enigma Oil Ltd, on 18th August, 2000. This company
is fully devoted to the Oil and Gas industry.
His reputation and successes easily earned him a
contract to trade in Oil in the International Market with the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its subsidiary
Pipeline. And Product Marketing Company (PPMC). Barbedos Oil Ltd was
registered specifically for this purpose on 19th July 2000. The
company was later changed to Barbedos Oil and Gas Services Ltd
on 8th November, 2004.
Barbedos Ventures Limited which started over 15
years ago was not only the parent company handling automobile
businesses of the company; it was also involved in the procurement
and supply of Fertilizer and Chemicals. For the automobile business
to go beyond the peak it has attained in importation of cars it
needed to break new grounds; to achieve this there was a need for
the President/CEO, Alhaji Kashim Bukar Shettima, to separate
the automobile business from the other businesses of Barbedos
Group. This gave birth to Barbedos Cars Limited,
registered on 27th June, 2005. Barbedos Group, on 23rd August 2006,
took over Volkswagen (VWON) Of Nigeria by acquiring the 35% Federal
Government shares thereby making Barbedos Ventures Limited the core
investor in Volkswagen Nigeria; with the promise to start the
assemblage of Volkswagen products and vehicles. With this Barbedos
has joined the league of global car manufacturing companies.
Enigma limited which was established December 17th 1997, has
started Dairy production, importation of frozen fish, manufacturing
of plastic products, etc.
The frequent movement of Business Executives along the West African
Coast informed the creation and registration of Skyjet Aviation
Services Ltd. Prelude to this was a critical understudy
of the Aviation industry by the President/CEO Alhaji Kashim Bukar
Shettima; after getting detailed knowledge of the needs of the
Nigerian, African and Global Aviation sectors, he ordered an
Eclipse 500 series in 30th October 2003, which the company will
be taking delivery in June, 2007. He bought another plane Premier
1 A which has already been delivered and is operational. He
inaugurated and registered a new company for his aviation business
called Skyjet Aviation Services Ltd on 7th March,
2006; and got permission from governments aviation regulatory
agencies to establish hangars at various locations, which will be
operated and maintained in partnership with the National Airway
Corporation (NAC), South Africa.
